Nere is stuck in a cave-in at the Grymforge. You can free him by using Runepowder or Smokepowder Satchel and blowing up the rocks. Once he is free, you need to make a choice of either siding with him or taking his head. In this Baldur’s Gate 3 Nere boss guide, we go over whether you should side with Nere or take his head.

Should You Side With Nere Or Take His Head In Baldur’s Gate 3?

Since the Myconid Colony asked for Nere’s head, if you side with Nere you will go against the the Myconid Colony. Siding with Nere also means siding with loyal Duergar and going up against Elder Brithvar. Nere and the Duergar are loyal to the Absolute and are involved in gnome slavery so siding with them is not a moral option.

If you go against Nere, the Elder Brithvar will declare his rebellion against him and the Duergar. The fight with Nere and the non-rebellion Duergar will commence. After you defeat Nere you can talk to Elder Brithvar about freeing the slaves and you will be rewarded with a lot of gold. Taking this route will clear the Grymforge permanently.

If you are playing an evil character then siding with Nere might make sense but taking his head allows you to earn more gold and complete the Myconid Colony and Grymforge questlines. So taking his head would be the more beneficial option to choose.
